Singing the Psalms

The Psalms are the hymn book of the Hebrew Bible. They are the songs that Jesus would have sung and read, and they formed an important part of his own spirituality. In the Anglican tradition they were chanted in what has become a defining element of Choral Evensong. But there are all sorts of ways to sing the Psalms. A Pslam is set as part of the readings for every Sunday, and comes in between the Old and New Testament readings. We are going to start singing this Psalm for the day too, in a new metrical format set to generally well known hymn tunes. One of the reasons we remain seated for this is to help us think about the words, rather than (as so often in the Church of England!) using the hymn to cover something else that is happening. We hope you'll enjoy the wide range of emotions and feelings the psalms convey!
